I want to be on the first page of Google!
1. Trust: old websites have an advantage the longer you are around the better you are trusted by the big boys
2. Optimization: make it easy to parse your pages use a professional
3. Keywords and competitors: it's not good to compete with Amazon Be specific dont use easy simple keywords.
4. Backlinks: the better the links, the faster your site will be listed
The more backlinks a website has, the quicker Google will pick up the changes on your website. If your website has great content but only a few backlinks, then it won't get high rankings.

Web page loading speed is important
Searchers tend to be happier if they get what they want as quickly as possible. Although site speed is only a minor factor in Google's ranking algorithm, it makes sense to optimize the performance of your pages.
To do: make sure that your web pages load as quickly as possible.
Social media a must?
Social signals such as the number of Google +1 clicks, Facebook mentions and tweets now influence the position of your website on Google's result pages.
To do: add social sharing buttons to your website and encourage your website visitors to mention your website on social networks.
Tips for your web site
To do: don't try to promote your website with quick-fix solutions. Quality is more important than quantity.
Keep your web site updated and current!Blog....Facebook do things!

A neat tip on IT services
Too many small businesses lean on an employee or friend "who knows a bit about computers" to manage their IT needs. But if you're serious about your business's growth and longevity, you need to get serious about IT support by either hiring an IT professional or using an outsourcing firm. The cost will pay off the first time you get the blue screen of death.
If you need IT support please let me know and I can guide you to a great company.

Manta tip
Use Your Invoices for Marketing
If you send your customers an invoice in print or electronically, use the invoice to promote your product or service. This is also a valuable touch point to thank your customers and prompt them to learn about other things you offer. Some effective messaging for your next invoice might be; "Thank you for your business. Give us a call to learn more about our frequent shopper program."

It's essential that you have a clear understanding of what works and what doesn't. The easiest way to figure this out is to ask where prospects heard about you. Then you can evaluate the cost of that channel vs. number of prospects reached.

If you have a flash web site read this
Just a few days ago Adobe said it was giving up on its Flash for hand held phones. What is next you ask? I think Flash as a product will be dropped and not supported in the near future.
If you are using a Flash web site, please consider shifting over to an HTML CSS supported web site in the near future. Google has often said it does not spider Flash web sites easily thus the rankings may be downgraded. A professional HTML web site is easily supported by all the browsers and search engines so switch soon and when you do, give Rossini.com a chance to write your next web site.

Internet routing glitch kicks millions offline
:::Threat Rank: Medium
The seemingly indestructible Internet relies on a few backbone systems to keep traffic flowing smoothly. Sometimes, one of those systems blips -- and millions of devices get abruptly kicked offline.
That's what happened Monday morning, when a software glitch in the Internet's wonky sounding "Border Gateway Protocol" created a ripple effect that crashed data networks around the world.
The outage appears to have originated early Monday with Juniper Networks (JNPR), a company that makes router hardware for large networks. A set of updates to a core Internet routing protocol triggered a software glitch in some Juniper's routers. When those routers crashed, key Internet pathways went down with them.
Time Warner Cable (TWC, Fortune 500), one of the largest Internet providers in the United States, suffered a short but widespread blackout. "We appear to be recovering from a large but brief internet outage affecting most of our service areas," the company wrote on its customer-service Twitter account.
But Time Warner's problem most likely originated even further upstream: Level 3 (LVLT), a so-called "tier 1" network and one of the key Internet gateways in the U.S., got caught in the crash.
What to do: If you are still experience connection problems, contact your Internet Service Provider for more assistance.

Web creation is not easy or a snap
Bottom line ladies and gentleman writing a web page is not easy especially if it is a complex one and not just a simple template. If it was so easy to do then why would the almost 70% of small business people who dont have a web site have not done it. It is a science, it uses creativity and it takes time.
The next time you go and tell a web person who ever it is that oh that is so darn easy you can do that in a few minuets that web person should politely smile and walk away!!!

Tips for marketing on social networks.
In order to get the best results when social networking for business here are 3 things you will need to do.
Exercise Patience
Take off your selling shoes and pull up a chair so you can get to know people. Building relationships is an absolute must to even get notice on any social sites and as you know this takes time. Even if you are only social networking for business time must first be taken to develop some type of bond with others or you will be invisible to them and useless to your business!
Establish Credibility
The bonds you do develop need to be meaningful insofar as maintaining a knowledgeable, professional and always helpful profile. For any marketing attempts to be successful people must first have some confidence that you know what you are talking about and that your intentions are good and not all business. Your best results will come ONLY after you have taken the time to develop this good reputation with others.
Develop Trust
The most important 'component' of the reputation you develop is trust! As touched upon above your reputation must be a positive one that reflects credibility but building trust is just as, if not more important. If people can not trust in you then any efforts you put into social networking for business will be wasted. People can not be expected to part with their hard earned money if they lack faith in you so obviously building trust is a priority. The best way to achieve this trust is to make a habit of being helpful or freely offering any type of information that may be of use or interest to others. Do so without any expectations of receiving anything in return and people will quickly regard you in a trustworthy manner. Besides, it feels good to be helpful to other!
There is no need for technical skills when marketing on social networks just simply be willing to pull up a chair and stay for a while. Tapping into the viral potential of these communities will require building relationships with others first and this will take time and patience. By building trust with people in this way simply makes it easier to effectively promote to them in the future. It is very important to remember these are in fact social communities therefore your acceptance MUST precede any marketing efforts. Once this acceptance is earned by following the 3 suggested steps above it will make social networking for business a breeze for you!

Why use Twitter
Twitter is a very contagious trend. Asking, “Why bother with Twitter?” may come as a surprise to many business owners. Truly, there is no question Twitter can improve your business’ popularity in the online world as all the aspects of social networking can be found in Twitter.
Twitter lets you get in touch with virtually anyone: from your closest friends to people from all around the world. In fact, using the services of this social networking site could bring you the following benefits:
• You can get as many followers as you want and ask them to interact with you – as they say; communicating with your clients is one good way to keep them hooked to your business. For one, you can focus on your customers more as you connect with them on a more personal level and you can get them to send you their opinion easier.
• In just one post, you can let everyone know what your business is currently up to. You can update your followers with what you are doing with your business, and what they can expect from it. You can link to your site or Facebook page.
• It gets your message across fast. It takes little time for you to post and is very easy for followers to retweet or pass on your message. This is very powerful when followers resend your message to all of their followers, especially if there is a link to your site or Facebook page.
While using Twitter, there are a few things that you must remember. Below are some of the things that you must take note of to make sure your posts are effective:
• Make it short and simple – the whole point in using Twitter is giving your customers an overview of what you want them to know. It makes it easier to capture their attention if they can see it and understand it at once.
• Use URL shorteners to take advantage of the posting capability – you know that you are limited to only 140 characters, so how do you put your long URLs? This is where URL shorteners come in; such shorteners like bit.ly will definitely make you put your message in a more convenient manner.
• Take time to put new content – refresh your tweets regularly. Making sure that your posts are updated would eventually strike your customers’ curiosity.
What’s best about this is that you get all your publicity free of charge, but be careful not to over do it. Followers will quickly tire of you beating them over the head with product information. In the end, answering the question “Why bother with Twitter?” can be summed up by understanding this: Twitter is something that you can harness to connect with those people that you can help. Further it allows you to offer helpful information to followers. Finally, you can keep followers up to date on your offering and your products. This can all be done quickly and efficiently by consistent tweets and links to your company properties. Your mindset needs to be one of giving and not taking.

Why not to use flash in your web site!
Some webmasters prefer to have a pure Flash website because they can look very impressive. Although Google can index Flash content to some extend, it is very unlikely that a Flash page will get high rankings on Google.
What's the problem with Flash pages?
Flash content cannot be indexed by search engines. If your website is a pure Flash site, then you can be sure that search engines won't be able to see 95% of your website content.
Google has several official statements regarding Flash content:
"Search engines are text based. This means that in order to be crawled and indexed, your content needs to be in text format. [...] Any content you embed in these files should also be available in text format or it won't be accessible to search engines. [...]
We recommend that you use rich-media technologies like Flash primarily for decorative purposes, and instead use HTML for content and navigation."
"Make sure that your site has a reasonable, seamless experience for visitors without Flash.
This may involve creating HTML-only equivalents for your Flash-based content that will automatically be shown to visitors who can't view Flash."
Adding your content in the noscript tag won't help
Theoretically, adding your web page content in the noscript tag on your web pages should make sure that search engines get the right content. Unfortunately, Google's John Mueller indicates that this doesn't work anymore:
"One of the problems with noscript is - as others have mentioned - that it's been abused quite a bit by spammers, so search engines might treat it with some suspicion.
So if this is really important content, then I wouldn't rely on all search engines treating your noscript elements in the same way as normal, visible, static content on your pages. If this is 'just' for comments, then that might be worth considering."
What does this mean to your website
If you want to get a reasonable amount of visitors through search engines, don't use Flash and other multimedia elements for the main contents of your web pages:
Only use Flash for decorative purposes.
The navigation of your website should use regular HTML a href links. Do not use fancy JavaScript or Flash navigation menus. Most search engines cannot parse them.
The main content of your web pages should be available as simple text.

A bit about domain names
TEN COMMANDMENTS OF INTERNET DOMAIN NAME VALUE
1 - The name shall have Development Value
2 - The name shall have .Dot value
3 - The name shall have Brand Recognition
4 - The name shall be Search Engine Friendly
5 - The name shall be Linguistically Viable
6 - The name shall have Traffic or Revenue
7 - The name shall have Industry Strength
8 - The name shall have Sales Value History
9 - The name shall have Intrinsic Value
10 - The name shall have Market Potential
1 - Development Value
A names base line value is based on the ability to use it. One of the primary issues we address in our DNA (Domain Name Analysis) is - Can this name be built into an instantly recognizable site whose name becomes synonymous with its content?
2 - .Dot Value
Dot.com's are, and probably always will be, more valuable than any other .dot designation. Even Dot.net's, and Dot.org's are by their very nature worth less on the open market. There are many reasons for this. One reason involves search engine rankings. Other issues pertain to the consumers hard to break habits. Note that .com is the internationally recognized extension for serious Internet business sites.
3 - Brand Recognition
Simple, familiar words work better than complicated, hard-to-spell ones. Short, catchy names in attractive industry segments are also very valuable. Kleenex is an example of brand recognition in the brick and mortar world. The brand name Kleenex was originally associated with facial tissue made BY KLEENEX ONLY. Because of powerful brand recognition however the name Kleenex came to literally equal ANY brand of facial tissue. "Will you hand me a Kleenex please". This is one of the areas where we rely heavily on our point of contact research and specialists experience with domain names. It is an area we do not analyze via computer algorithm. Rarely will any name receive an excellent valuation under this commandment unless it meets the above criteria AND carries the .Dot com extension.
For explanations of the rest of the Commandments 4 - 10Free Reprint Articles, visit http://extraordinaryartist.com/domain-name.htm It's FREE and will ensure you don't make a mistake right up front when trying to establish a viable Internet Business.

Why have a facebook ad?
VANCOUVER, BC, September 24, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Part 2: Facebook
Many business people tend to disregard Facebook, thinking it is for teenagers, or grandparents who want to post or view pictures of their grandkids. They just don't think that Facebook is to be taken seriously in the business world.
It's an easy assumption to make - Facebook is considered, after all, the father of "social" media. But business became social a while ago. If you study any of the TV commercials, websites or other promotional materials around, you will see companies asking their customers to 'like' them on Facebook for a promotion or discount and Facebook URLs and Twitter accounts are given where once website URLs were.
Like it or not, Facebook is a phenomenon that is not going to go away anytime in the foreseeable future. A profile or fan page on Facebook can obviously help with brand recognition but it can actually do so much more than that.
Firstly, Facebook is easy to integrate with other social media programs such as Twitter and LinkedIn. There are apps that will allow you to integrate blogs from your website or your Twitter feed. You should ideally be promoting your blog on both Facebook and Twitter whenever they are posted.
Secondly, make it easy for people to find your Facebook page. Add your Facebook URL and Twitter link to your email signature so it is available on every communication you send out.
Use your wall to post upcoming events, webinars, promotions, etc. Consider offering discounts (they don't have to be huge) to people who 'like' you on Facebook. You can also use your wall to let customers and business colleagues know your recent achievements, projects or interesting activities. Share good news with your 'fans', share interesting articles or link to videos that might interest your clients or colleagues.
Last, but by no means least, you can use Facebook to increase your business network. Go to your friends' pages and check out any mutual friends that you could also connect with. You can also use the 'Find Friends' button to expand your network.

New Google Info
sitelinks
If Google decides to display sitelinks for your website, your site will get a much more prominent display than before.
How to make your sitelinks more attractive
Google uses the first 30-35 characters of the meta description tag of a web page for the snippets.
To increase the number of clicks on the snippets, you should optimize your meta description tags:
* The first 35 characters in the meta description tag should contain a clear description of the page and/or a call-to-action.
* Each page of your website should have its own meta description.
Note that Google updates the sitelinks of a website periodically. It may take some time before the new descriptions of your web pages appear in the sitelinks.

Google +1 what does it mean
What is Google's +1 button?
The +1 button is Google's answer to Facebook's "Like" button. It is a button that you can add to your website.
When one of your website visitors clicks the +1 button, your website URL appears on the +1 tab on the user's Google profile. Google wants website visitors to click on the +1 button when they find something interesting or recommendable.
What does Google do with the +1 clicks?
For people who are logged in to Google, their search result snippets might be annotated with the number of +1's that the listed page has received.
If someone who is connected to you through your Google account (Gmail chat list, contacts, etc.) clicked the +1 button, then the name of the person might be listed next to the search result snippet.
Google also announced that the +1 button will influence the search rankings of a page. The number of +1 clicks and the person who clicks on your +1 buttons might influence the position of your pages.
As it is very likely that spammers will try to use the +1 button, Google will perform tests before the +1 button has a major influence on the search results.
According to Google, the number of +1 clicks can also influence the position of an AdWords ad for the page with the +1 button.
How can you add the Google +1 button to your web pages?
It is very easy to add the Google +1 button to your web pages. The button is available in different sizes and different formats.
You can view examples and instructions here: How to add the Google +1 button to your web pages
What is Google's +1 button not?
The Google +1 button is not the same as the Google Buzz button. However, many sites have already replaced their old Google Buzz button with the new +1 button.
It is likely that Google Buzz functionality will also be added to +1. Google also announced analytics for the +1 button to show webmasters info on geography, demographics, content, and search impact.
Although Google's +1 button does not have a major impact on the position of your web pages in Google's search results yet, it does not hurt to add the button to your pages.

Offer a solution and they will come
Once the call was over I talked to one of my associates and we discussed the call and agreed, the potential client might be in trouble. I listened to my associate and his solution for the potential client and what I asked him was "do we have a solution that will work and save him money". The answer was yes. I said let me call the prospective client and see if he would be open for a suggestion from us.
The whole reason to write this is that if you listen to the customer and then offer a solution to his or her problem, the sale is almost anti climatic, the order should naturally follow.
Help the client and get the order that is what we often forget to do in sales but must always strive to achieve. Offer a solution and you more times than not will win!

How can you rank better in the search engines
You don't often look at your search keyword but like Rossini a famous composer I might add, there are almost 12,000,000 search pages. It takes a lot of effort to get in that first page. I blog, I facebook, I twitter, I linkin, I do search engine submissions and a lot more. Trust me, it takes time and effort and with the wink of an eye Google changes their algorithm and everything moves down or away based on their whims.
Now type in soap and you will see 125,000,000 web pages listed!! My whole reason for writing this is to tell you that getting ranked is not as easy as it seems. Ranking as I said earlier takes effort and time and yes a little luck.

What is a web directory?
A web directory is not a search engine and does not display lists of web pages based on keywords; instead, it lists web sites by category and subcategory. Most web directory entries are also not found by web crawlers but by humans.[1] The categorization is usually based on the whole web site rather than one page or a set of keywords, and sites are often limited to inclusion in only a few categories. Web directories often allow site owners to submit their site for inclusion, and have editors review submissions for fitness.
Most of the directories are general in scope and list websites across a wide range of categories, regions and languages. But some niche directories focus on restricted regions, single languages, or specialist sectors. One type of niche directory with a large number of sites in existence is the shopping directory. Shopping directories specialize in the listing of retail e-commerce sites.
Examples of well known general web directories are Yahoo! Directory and the Open Directory Project (ODP). ODP is significant due to its extensive categorization and large number of listings and its free availability for use by other directories and search engines.[
So are web directories important? The answer is yes, have your web person make sure you have been entered in them at least the big ones.

What really counts..rankings or leads?
Talk soon
Joe
Is Facebook really..real??
So where does it leave our larger companies? The traditional web site with a Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and blog is still the best overall way to make money and profits. The power of programming for a web site continues to grow offering amazing options yet to be even touched by social media. My recommendation thus is....why not have it all!!!
More next time!
Have a great week.

news tidbits
Last week, Google was granted a patent that describes how Google might segment the content of a web page. Depending on the location of the content, a web page will get higher or lower rankings.
Also in the news: Yahoo introduces Search Direct, Matt Cutts talks about localized content and Google, Bing adds real-time results to news search, further information about Google's Panda update and more.
From Matt Cutts about Google Panda:
"The update is definitely not sitewide ? there are a number of sites we looked at where the update had only hit pages of a certain type. For example ecommerce sites where the category pages were fine but product pages were hit hard. [...]
This update is going to cause major issues for anybody that has a large site with product descriptions that are duplicated across lots of other sites. If you have a few of these it?s not an issue to rewrite them but a lot of big ecommerce sites have 10,000+ products and to rewrite those is going to be a major headache."
From Alexa news about paid links:
Once again, paid links are a hot topic in the search engine optimization community. The website of J. C. Penney had number 1 rankings for many competitive keywords. It turned out that the J. C. Penney website obtained these rankings through buying links on over 2000 pages.
The paid links were reported to Google and many of J. C. Penney's rankings dropped from number 1 to number 70 and below.
What are paid links?
If you pay the webmaster of another site to link to your website, then the link is a paid link. Paid links can be used to advertise your website on other sites. As long as the paid links use the rel=nofollow attribute, Google doesn't have any problems with them.
The problem arises when paid links are used to get higher rankings in the regular search results on Google.
Google is very clear about paid links
Google does not like paid links. According to Google's official statement, you should avoid paid links at all costs:
"[Some] webmasters engage in the practice of buying and selling links that pass PageRank, disregarding the quality of the links, the sources, and the long-term impact it will have on their sites. Buying or selling links that pass PageRank is in violation of Google's Webmaster Guidelines and can negatively impact a site's ranking in search results."
Google even has an official form that enables you to report paid links to Google:
"If you know of a site that buys or sells links, please tell us by filling out the fields below. We'll investigate your submissions, and we'll use your data to improve our algorithmic detection of paid links.

MerchantCircle, an online network of US local business owners, revealed in its quarterly reports that more local businesses are turning to Facebook and other social networking sites like Twitter, as a low-cost option for their marketing efforts.
The survey, conducted with 8,500 random small and local business owners across the U.S, revealed that 70% of these business owners are actively marketing their business through Facebook. This represents a 20% increase over 2010.
Most small businesses running on limited budgets (less than $2,500 annually) and 60% of survey respondents do no plan to raise their budget this year. This makes Facebook an attractive and cost-effective marketing tool for most local business owners.

It is not nice to fool Mr. Google!
Here is a clip from the Wall Street Journal:
Google Inc. is penalizing Overstock.com Inc. in its search results after the retailer ran afoul of Google policies that prohibit companies from artificially boosting their ranking in the Internet giant's search engine.
Overstock's pages had recently ranked near the top of results for dozens of common searches, including "vacuum cleaners" and "laptop computers." But links to Overstock on Tuesday dropped to the fifth or sixth pages of Google results for many of those categories, greatly reducing the chances that a user would click on its links.
This big company should not have tried to fool Google but it tried and got spanked. Do not use link farms, do not try to spam the search engines. use legitimate approaches such as blogs, Face Book, Twitter and Linked in Posts and yes also use this great new site called Meengle.net. I really like it and it is a nice change of pace from Facebook.
Bottom line, seek the advice of a professional and let them guide you. Oh by the way, I just happen to know a good one so just ask me...me oh yea me again oh well ok I can help you.
Have a great day...until next time

Is there more out there than Google?
As you can see, it takes more than just submitting to Google to get noticed. I believe in a total attack plan to bring leads. It takes planning and strategy and time. If you give it that time, you can see results and of course sales and profits.
Until next time....

Web links
External inbound links to your web site are good if they are real and relate to what your web site is trying to say or sell. Some what we call in the business as landing pages can work if they are each different and have text that is unique and relates to your web site. Cross linking to your vendors is also a good inbound linking strategy.

A bit about Greg:
I am a 24-year resident of Johnson County and have been associated in some way with JCCC for most of those years. I have served on the Foundation Board of Directors, helped with scholarship fund raising, worked to coordinate planning and development between the college and the City of Overland Park, and for the last two years have served on the Executive Committee of the JCCC Foundation. I have also benefited personally from JCCC as my eldest daughter earned College Now credit at JCCC, my niece and nephew ran track and cross country at the college, and I have attended many fantastic events at Yardley Hall.
The importance of JCCC to this community has always been obvious to me. It allows our high school students to accelerate their college credits at a very reasonable cost, it prepares our graduates to move on to a four-year college, it trains and re-trains workers for our leading businesses, and it brings arts, culture and high quality sporting competitions to our doorsteps.
I am running for the Board of Trustees because I believe the future growth of Johnson County and the metropolitan area will depend on our commitment to high quality and highly valued post-secondary education. The jobs of tomorrow will be dependent upon a higher level of training, more technology, and more continuing education than in the past. JCCC has to play an important role in keeping our economic engine growing and going.
Please look through this site for more information about me, my family, the people who know me and my goals for Johnson County Community College. Then I hope you will consider supporting me - first with your vote, but also by sharing this information with your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers. Make sure they know that an important election will occur on April 5, 2011.
