Sometimes you just cant win!

I will make this very general because I think it applies to a lot of web people and web marketeers out there and maybe it just applies to us all in a different way. Recently working with a customer we created a drop dead neat web site and then after it was up and working I began the process of marketing it. I submitted it to the search engines on a regular basis, I wrote a neat PR release, we made sure they had a very nice Facebook Fan page, I wrote multiple ads in on line newspaper's and Craig's list to push the business, I posted to all of my Friend son Facebook, Twitter and Linked in and more. In short I worked my ass off. The Facebook page got lots of likes and visits, the web page was recognized by his customer's and he got customers from it. But what often happens is that a customer just does not totally listen or participate such as doing facebook posts or adding to the content of the web site and more and ultimately even though it was working and growing they ran out of money and well that was that. Instead of just sayng I cant do this at least for now, they slam you and make up something that hits you out of the blue and bottom line was and they finally admitted it, they did not have the money to continue. I ask why not have the intestinal fortitude to just to say that, I would not have gotten mad, I would have tried to find a way to keep going but no I was slammed. Oh well, what can I say, it happens.

I just apologized, gave tha person some options and well I go on to the next one. I have many happy people but I guess the moral is, I can not please everyone no matter how hard I try. You just have to keep going, growing and learning.

I think we have all been there :) I use a Franklin planner and try very hard to follow that everyday. Many now have calendars on their phones and that is great. One person said if you don't know where you are going how can you get there!

The same holds true for your web site and your social media identity and campaign. Everyday I try to get on and post something of interest. It is important to keep that pattern up and it will pay off.

Getting web vistors

I have often been told if you rank in the top ten on Google you are set. I will not deny that ranking high is very good but I believe that just ranking alone is not enough. You must have a product that potential customers want and you must give them a reason to come into your web site. I say don't just rely on Google rankings, be proactive. What is proactive you ask? I say you use blogging to get people interested, you use Facebook and Twitter and Linkedin to get people to come look at just what you are offering. I like Linkedin and no this is not a commercial for them but I enjoy the posts and also posting myself. I have started to use Twitter more but it is an acquired taste to use to drive traffic and it is mostly to enjoy topics of interest posted by others. So what I say is use many potential bullets in your gun to get traffic and make sales. Have you thought about a PR release? How about making sure you are in the top directories. Oh for those that do not know it, a directory or directories are places that even Google goes to find web sites so you should try to be there. Also keep your content on your web site as fresh as you can, I know sometimes you can not because you have to wait for a web person but there are now simple content management software available that will allow you to change your web site on your own. I have them and you are welcome to ask me about them. So let me summarize, to get more web visitors and turn them into customers :

Change your content often
Use social media vigorously
Make sure someone is submitting you to the main search engines and directories on a regular basis
Blog...blog...blog some more be an expert!

Another way to reach potential customers is by using e-mail. The use of e-mail marketing has been around for sometime and with e-mail packages out there, the ability to alert your customers or potential customers of new and exciting things is sometimes only a key click away. Although I have not used e-mail marketing as much as I I should, I think that if you have a large e-mail list of what I call opt in customers (Those that want to hear from you and let you send them e-mails), you should take advantage of this very important tool. You know recent statistics show that old line paper mail gets about 1 to 2% response while e-mail marketing usually can get 2 to 4%. It is much easier, faster and increases productivity to use e-mail marketing. There are several packages out there, one very popular one is Constant Contact but there are others. Research them and then use the one that seems the easiest for you. Try not to bombard your suspects, I believe maybe once a week and certainly not daily. Make your e-mail blast interesting so people will open it and read it. Now they even have video e-mail packages and I may soon try one and give you a report back. Seeing is believing they say :)

I have had many people ask me if I use Linkedin and does it help me in my business. My answer is yes it does and I enjoy working it and yes I said working it. You must like every thing else put work into Linkedin, you must post and add groups and join in the discussions. Once you get active you will start to see opportunities for your business. Find groups that interest you, post and get feed back or give feed back. Ask for advice, soon people will start to ask to be a link to you and if you like what you see add them, Yes it all takes time but it is worth it in the end.

I often wonder that after all of my training as a salesman if anyone needed me anymore? With all the new fangeld gadgets out maybe that movie Death Of A Salesman was true? Well I am here to tell you we that old core of trained professionals are just as needed today as we were years ago and maybe even more so. How to get leads!

I have been in sales for too long to say but over time I have seen many things and one thing is clear, getting sales leads is just as tough today as it was in days gone bye. I started my career with training that was based almost totally on the "cold call" concept. We would be put in a territory and we sometimes went block to block, business by business knocking on doors and leaving information or demonstrating our product. At times a bunch of us would gather for breakfast, discuss strategies then we would all help a fellow salesperson by "bombing" their territory. We would all go out and knock on doors and get leads. This was fun and it built comraderie but again it was an all day affair and it was hard especially when it was 100 degrees outside!

Then came the rising cost of gas and we learned to be more efficient meaning we used the phone a lot and made telephone calls and mailers. This was easier for me and I learned to be good at using the phone to get my foot in the door. Those that could get more appointments were usually elevated in the eyes of management and of course if they said there was an interest then you had a reason to go and not waste as much time on the road.

Wow then came the mobile phone and instead of pulling over and dropping a few quarters and sometimes freezing or over heating you could use the old bag phone and really make some time by calling while in that car. Of course the cost was high and soon management said no only use it when necessary but it was sure fun. I once changed an entire mobile policy by racking up a $850.00 bill one month ...oh they were mad at me but they did pay it :)

What I remembered most was the time spent addressing letters and envelopes and using the glue stick thingie that helped me put stamps on. The trips to a place called a post office, then waiting about two days and calling all those people to ask if they got my letter.Most threw them out but a few said yes.

Fast forward to today and the use of e-mail, and video e-mail and blogs and Facebook, Twitter, Linked In oh boy so many techno things to use to find leads. But through it all I still enjoy the good old telephone call, the actual visiting a person and meeting them face to face and the opportunity to demonstrate my product. Yes technology is surging forward but sometimes every once in a while it is nice to go back in time and use the old methods that still work today and I believe will continue to work for a long time to come. Yes you need a great web site, a Facebook page, a Google+ page, you need to use e-mail and to blog but as someone said a long time ago, it takes a village, well it still takes a lot of marketing ideas to succeed.

I was on a call the other day and I was showing the person the many benefits of having a web site. I showed social media and talked about it and how important it now is. I showed the reporting features and how you could track your hits and where they were looking. I demonstrated how you could give your potential members their own little web site and also a Google map to their location. How about the ability to make your own changes. The time savings that the web could offer and money savings. After two hours I left frustrated, I could not seem to hit home that a web site is more than just a brochure today, it is a business tool to be used and if used it can really make you and save you money. Oh well on to the next potential customer.

Thanks for the timely question, Sean, and for tuning in to the show every weekend. I don't think Google's new privacy policy is quite the end of the world, as some critics contend. But the change is important and deserves your attention.

For those who haven't heard, on March 1, 2012, Google will roll out a consolidated privacy policy that covers almost all of its products. Currently, it has more than 70 separate privacy documents!

What this change means in practice is that you'll be treated as a single user across all Google products. All your privacy settings will be the same and all your data will available to every other Google service.

Google says this will create a safer, more intuitive experience for users. With the unified platform, for instance, Maps could automatically provide driving directions based on an appointment you've just made in Calendar.

Your searches can become more contextual. If you watch YouTube videos on healthy cooking, Google Search will return healthy recipes first when searching for new dishes to make. You can decide for yourself whether that's cool or creepy.

But make no mistake: Google is also doing this to bring in more targeted advertising revenue and to compete with rival behemoth, Facebook.

I may sound like a broken record but I really believe that social media is making an impact on business. I am not saying it is the end of the web site as we know it, trust me, the things you can do with a CMS database driven web site is just astounding. I say for marketing purposes and ranking you must be on as many social media platforms as you can stand to be on. Also of course having a Blogger account helps a lot too.

OK occasionally I just blab, I am good at blabbing. I blab all day long on here or on the phone. I still use the out dated phone system but I use a lot of e-mail and a lot of Skype it is fun. Ii am getting to know Google+ better and am adding that to the things we do at our company. Brenda is working hard on a web site that is being built using a content management system and it is looking very good and should be up soon. This company sells solar products and some of those products are just plain neat. I am looking forward to doing web marketing for them.

Recently we investigated a company that offered $1.99/mo web hosting! Wow oh wow what a deal or was it. When we dug into the fine print that $1.99 was only for standard hosting of a very small web site. If you wanted a bigger web site oh that cost more. OK bigger web site more megabyte and Gig usage, guess what...that was more money. Oh you want spam filtering and virus filtering too that was more money. You want more than one e-mail address...more money. You want support..more money and you had to get a support ticket before they would help you. I forget to mention there was a charge for an English speaker!! OK I stretched the truth on that one but not far! Bottom line what started out at $1.99 quickly was past the $60.00/mo mark and that was only just the beginning. I write this because often time companies try to trick you into thinking you are getting a great deal when in reality you are not. I ask you to think local, think American, see that companies such as ours do not charge for our spam filtering, speak clear English, we do not ask for a support ticket. I am often asked Joe what do I need on my web site and I look back and say, what do you do best in your business. I start with who are you, what is your history, what products and services do you offer. What makes you different from the rest of the pack. I also say have a good contact form and also add a blog, add a facebook fan page, add an e-mail capture form to start to build your own list of prospects.There is much more of course but this gets the grey matter turning and now you are on your way to knowing what you are going to put on a new web site.

Recently we encountered some problems with our web sites that used some flash animation and the reason was Adobe had updated its Flash and made a booboo or at least a small one. We quickly shifted away from the program we used and used one that did not use Flash. I would say tens of thousands of web sites across the country experienced the exact same problems as we did.

Just a few days ago Adobe said it was giving up on its Flash for hand held phones. What is next you ask? I think Flash as a product will be dropped and not supported in the near future.

The seemingly indestructible Internet relies on a few backbone systems to keep traffic flowing smoothly. Sometimes, one of those systems blips -- and millions of devices get abruptly kicked offline.

That's what happened Monday morning, when a software glitch in the Internet's wonky sounding "Border Gateway Protocol" created a ripple effect that crashed data networks around the world.

The outage appears to have originated early Monday with Juniper Networks (JNPR), a company that makes router hardware for large networks. A set of updates to a core Internet routing protocol triggered a software glitch in some Juniper's routers. When those routers crashed, key Internet pathways went down with them.

Time Warner Cable (TWC, Fortune 500), one of the largest Internet providers in the United States, suffered a short but widespread blackout. "We appear to be recovering from a large but brief internet outage affecting most of our service areas," the company wrote on its customer-service Twitter account.

But Time Warner's problem most likely originated even further upstream: Level 3 (LVLT), a so-called "tier 1" network and one of the key Internet gateways in the U.S., got caught in the crash.

Seems like every year one or two people come to us and say just take that or copy that and we tell them no I am sorry that is a violation of copyright law. What is amazing is how many web people will risk their home their lively hood even jail for just a few hundred dollars. I have to write this because I just have to. I am tired of people just saying oh that is easy Joe just cut and paste or I am going to use someone else's articles or pictures you can do that its the net. Or heck you can do that on Word why cant you do it in a web page!

Bottom line ladies and gentleman writing a web page is not easy especially if it is a complex one and not just a simple template.
